Greater New Haven observances for MLK Day

Are you looking for a way to celebrate Rev. Martin Luther King’s legacy? If so, there are a number of events happening in Greater New Haven that welcome you.

HAMDEN

— The Hamden Black History Committee and The Office of the Mayor are hosting the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Sunday, January 15 at 4pm at Christian Tabernacle Church located at 425 Newhall Street in Hamden.

The 2017 theme is: “Preserving Our Legacy,  Restoring Our Community.”  

NEW HAVEN

— The  annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Love March steps off at  10:45 a.m. Sunday, January 15 at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 100 Lawrence St. It will take place regardless of the weather.

— The Annual Martin Luther King Conference takes place Monday, January 16 from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Wexler-Grant Community School, 55 Foote Street, New Haven. The 2017 theme is “Change.”

A continental breakfast and hot lunch will be served.

There will be workshops for children and adults, entertainment, exhibits, free raffles, vendors and more.

— The Yale Peabody Museum is offering performances, community open mics, and educational activities for visitors of all ages throughout the weekend and Monday. The Teen Summit, held Sunday and Monday, will have activities at both the Peabody and the Amistad Exhibit at New Haven Museum (museum admission is free from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00p.m.).

Attendees are asked to please bring a non-perishable food item to help support two local soup kitchens.
